There are a class of programs out there called Ray Tracing software. The big ones are what they use to create the CGI stuff for movies.

Now for us poor folk there are programs which come close, and in the hands of someone with talent, produce some beautiful stuff. Some as good as the big stuff will.

My fav among these is a program called Bryce. Now, about 4 years ago, I started collecting work from other people using this program. Like all things "collecting" I overdid it... twice. I now have some 900 pictures done with this software. Some are just amazing.

What you do is create a full 3D wire frame drawing, like you would in a CAD program. Then you apply textures and colors, then describe for the program where the light sources are. Finally the actual Ray Tracing process, uses the light source, calculates what light would be reflected form the shape, given the colors and textures, and writes it as a picture.

Yeah, sounds complicated. It is. Very math intensive. But the real trick is learning to use it. Anyway, I took 25 pics as a sample and posted them here:

Many are big enough to use as wallpaper, so help yourself.

One pic I found, the artist posted a picture with and without a girl in it. I took both pictures and ran them together into a flash file, and it came out pretty good. http://fredsitelive.com/images/bryce/girl.html

I remember when Bryce came out and was all the rave

I toyed with it at best because the rendering took so long back then and my meek artistic talent just wouldn't support such long ours of effort

these pics are quite impressive
