View Full Version : Lake Baikal, Russia, Eastern Siberia
There was an earthquake magnitude 9 in August 2008 on the shore of Lake Baikal, Russia; looking up some information about Lake Baikal it seems to be an interesting lake. Famed to be deeper 12977 m than the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean at 11022 m, a site of the Dalai Lama Buddhist monastery, also interesting myths and legends.
"It is said that a huge stone fell from the sky like they do now, sometimes. While it was falling it became red hot. When it hit the earth there was a great rainfall. Earth, stone, and water came to a boil and in that turmoil Lake Baikal was born."
In ancient times the place where Lake Baikal now is, was covered a dense forest. There was so much game that it was difficult for man to pass through it. And among birds there was one, as big as a sturgeon. Its wings were huge and strong, and if it touched a tree, the tree would fall down with its roots up, and if it touched a rock the rock would fly to bits. The people were afraid of the bird, but they could not kill it as when it flew by, hot rays it eradiated, made hunters fall in a dead faint.
But a man was born. He grew before the people's eyes. Soon he grew up as strong as Hercules and feared nothing. The people came and asked him to save them and kill that monstrous fiery bird. The hero listened to them. From 100 trees he made a bow, from 200 stems he cut out an arrow and set off hunting. Shortly after the Earth shuddered. And the bird fell down and a fire broke out, and it was hot in the skies. The people left the taiga for the mountains and saw water columns through the flames. And a sea appeared on that place. While the Earth and the taiga were burning, the people "were crying out: "Baikal, Baikal". Since that time the place has been called Baikal.
Legends of Baikal Origin (http://www.bww.irk.ru/baikalorigin/baikallegends.html)
I find it fascinating that the Dalai Lama has a monastery there and could that legend be of a giant?
he legend says that Olkhon witnessed the khan Khoto-bai (supreme gods' messenger) descending from up the sky and his son Khan-Khubu, white-haired gold-eagle, who was the first to get the gift of shaman. The isle of Olkhon has always been sacral place of the northern shaman world. Nowadays near Cope (the rock Shamanka) on the lakeside close to the village of Khuzir the tourists still may see the ribbons quivering in the wind. This is the place of theolatry, Burkhan. The ancient legend narrates that in the cave of the rock Shamanka lived the ruler of the isle and its outskirts, Ezin, or Burkhan. Olkhon loftiest peak, Izimei, that is nearly 1300 high, is said to be another sacral place. Somewhere at the foot of Izimei was once chained the immortal Bear.

The Baikal Neutrino Telescope
Lake Baikal, Russia
DESY Zeuthen
Neutrino - Astrophysics
The underwater neutrino telescope NT-200 is located in the Siberian lake Baikal at a depth of approximately 1 km. Deployment and maintenance of the Baikal detector is carried out during the winter months, when the lake is covered with a thick ice sheet. From the ice surface, the optical sensors can easily be lowered into the water underneath. Once deployed, the optical sensors take data over the whole year and the data taken are permanently transmitted to the shore over electrical cables.
The BAIKAL experiment played a pioneering role in neutrino astronomy: During spring 1993, scientists from Russian institutes and from DESY were the first to install an underwater telescope which took data not only for some hours, but for a whole year. At that time, the detector comprised only three strings carrying 36 optical sensors in total. Since 1998 the Baikal collaboration takes data with the NT-200 telescope which consists of 192 optical sensors deployed on eight strings.
DESY Zeuthen has been participating in the experiment since 1988. With a moderate extension of the telescope, Baikal will be able to hold the leading position among all neutrino telescopes on the Northern hemisphere. From approximately 2005 on, however, the the bigger neutrino telescopes currently being constructed in the Mediterranean are expected to take over.
To follow your lead, I started looking at neutrons and there is a program called IceCube, looking for high-energy neutrinos under the South Pole.

Sorry Zorgon, I don't know how to do that yet.
Seems Neutrino Detectors are everywhere...fascinating!!
Astronauts Notice Mysterious Ice Circles in Lake Baikal in Russia (http://www.greenpacks.org/2009/06/02/astronauts-notice-mysterious-ice-circles-in-lake-baikal-in-russia/)
Astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) have spotted what has been described as “two mysterious dark circles” in the ice of Lake Baikal in Russia. Some aspects of “odd blemishes” that the astronauts noticed in April 2009 defy explanation and hence mysterious.
Is this really a mystery? Isn't the site of the Baikal Neutrino Telescope in the vicinity of this circle and isn't this circle in the vicinity of that earthquake?
Russian Mini Submarines Explore Worlds Deepest Lake Baikal (http://www.marinebuzz.com/2008/07/31/russian-mini-submarines-explore-worlds-deepest-lake-baikal/)
During the exploration, the scientists may also find 1600 tons of ‘ Kolchak’s Gold ‘ - the gold stolen by General Kolchak of the Russian Imperial Army during the 1918-1920 Civil War, which sank in the icy lake while transportation...
Research will include tectonic information-gathering, exploration for archeological artifacts, exploring the unique lake’s ecosystem including its self-regulation processes and traces of oil and gas hydrates...
will soon be joined by European and American scientists.
Part of the ongoing research is focused on examining the processes through which microbes in the world`s deepest lake digest petroleum that naturally enters the water.
Dr. Mikhail Grachyov, an expert on the molecular evolution of Baikal`s animal and plant life, said earlier that the first oil source was found at a depth of around 850 meters (2,800 feet) to the south of Barguzin Bay, and that samples of the oil had been taken.
"It turns out that a large number of organisms live in this oil. This will require a huge amount of study," he said.
"We will study everything - the oil, the means through which it is broken down, the microbes, physical characteristics, and so on. This is necessary both for fundamental science and for practical goals."
He also said research into Baikal`s oil may provide new insights into the origins of petroleum.
The consensus view among scientists is that crude oil is formed by decayed plant matter accumulating on the bed of a body of water and being subjected to heat and compression under heavy sediment over a period of millions of years.
However, several Russian scientists going back as far as Dmitry Mendeleyev have suggested an `abiogenic hypothesis,` according to which petroleum was formed from carbon deposits originating deep in the Earth`s mantle.
More oil fissures are found in Lake Baikal`s bedrock (http://www.media.rin.ru/eng/news/12036/5/)
The microbes that eat and clean up oil spills has already been established and it is widely known that oil is not formed from decaying plant matter so what is the point of all this investigation?
And can the oil industry be sabotaged by some well placed microbes?
Russian Navy Reveals Its Secret UFO Encounters
military divers in Siberia's Lake Baikal, the world's deepest lake, encountered "a group of humanoid creatures dressed in silvery suits" at a depth of 160 feet. Three humans died during the ensuing chase.

The Russian Navy has declassified its records of UFO encounters, many of which take place in or around water, reports the Web site of the English-language Russian news channel Russia Today.
"They are most often seen in the deepest part of the Atlantic Ocean, in the southern part of the Bermuda Triangle, and also in the Caribbean Sea," said one naval intelligence officer quoted by the Web site.
Another incident cited involved six unknown objects that followed a nuclear submarine in the Pacific. When the sub surfaced, so did the objects — which then lifted themselves out of the water and flew away.

In one case in 1982 a group of military divers training at Baikal spotted a group of humanoid creatures dressed in silvery suits. The encounter happened at a depth of 50 meters, and the divers tried to catch the strangers. Three of the seven men died, while four others were severely injured.

This lake seems to be of great interest to many, , , ,
I wonder if Lake Baikal has any relationship with the Tunguska Explosion or if there is an ancient installation in the vicinity?
ops guess I already posted about that....
I guess others are interested in Lake Baikal and the hole(s).
“I think about underwater bases and say: why not? Nothing should be discarded,” says Vladimir Azhazha. “Skepticism is the easiest way: believe nothing, do nothing. People rarely visit great depths. So it’s very important to analyze what they encounter there.”
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station noticed two mysterious dark circles in the ice of Russia’s Lake Baikal in April. Though the cause is more likely aqueous than alien, some aspects of the odd blemishes defy explanation.
The two circles are the focal points for ice break-up and may be caused by upwelling of warmer water in the lake ... But the location of the circle near the southern tip of the lake (pictured above) where water is relatively deep and cold is puzzling.
Further down in the article:
Recently a German researcher stated that he had recorded the locations of deviations in the Earth’s magnetic field. He thinks that it is possible that micro wormholes are causing these deviations. His research has lead him to think that the AUTEC base on Andros Island might be the cause of these deviations. He went on further to explain where he believes four deviations are located. He states that they are located at “Fish Hotel, Lyford Cay, White Hole, near Nassau; and Dogleg Reef, near Marathon, in South Florida.”
