Turning off registration?
It is being discussed that we should turn off auto registration and have new prospects for membership send us an email with their choice of user name and reason for wanting to join. We would then set up their account and send them a temporary password.
What say you?

I personally believe that :feedtroll: can be better acomplished this way
A wise Albanian once said, "When you come in to my restaurant and read the menu
either order or say something nice and leave."
I can make up some more quotes, too, if need be.:coffee:

Why? Because it takes about an hour a day to stop the porn, drug, and other sales spam. Anyone that wants to become a new member can email us at earthsbanner@yahoo.com or, , , , would you rather see all the porn, drugs, and other sales spam that would result from me not deleting their applications first?

Good reason Norval.
If it were my time being wasted, I'd definitely change it.
I would post the reason along with the instructions for joining.
I did not know that you have been doing that daily maintenance chore. Thanks for cleaning house!

As far as I know the software provides the possibillity to do this automatically.

We have a responsibility to our regular, serious members who come here for genuine discussion and knowledge, I think we have to do it, the way, we will find the right people, or they will find us, we don't need these people.

Wow, really? What a drag. I never knew.

Thanks. I agree. It's gotta be hard enough with the folks that do make the cut. And if I understand, the idea of having that cut in the first place is so that you've got people who are at least capable or self-moderating, right?

OK, it's settled, we will be turning off the AUTOMATIC registration. Anyone can still request to register by sending an email to earthsbanner@yahoo.com with their user name.
Thank you to those that responded with their comments. The problem is not Earth's Banner alone, as we have learned that most of the vbulletin forums were inundated by a wave of spammers even with the spam blocker stuff all turned on. We considered the ISP spam blocker add on, but it is like hitting a fly with a bomb. Takes out too many ISPs and blocks too many. Anyone with a gmail account would have been banned, as an example.
We are not concerned with how many members we have, but with their honest efforts to discover the truth of matters we discuss here.
Zorgon should be sent to "The Pit" for his suggestion, , , ,
Thanks again folks.

Ah Norval;
The joys and pleasures of maintaining a forum, or blog.
One place I was admin (several websites, and forums, etc.), I got so sick of it, I finally renamed the administrator's login to Janitor. It just felt right.
I have noticed that nowadays the page trolling bots, looking for such places to paste spam, will land on almost any page that has a <form> </form> in it, and at least try. I have had to protect almost all the self-editing pages on my site with either a password, or a cookie. it sux. a lot.
Like someone else said, "your call", and I think you made a good one. Life's too damned short to wade thru that crap all day. For anyone!
Suggestion: You might put up a small page header, explaining this change, and how to "enroll", or merely make the change to the "Register" page. Please nothing over 2 pages long. I notice even PA/PC has shortened theirs
PS: Zorgon; go bite a mailman.

Hi yah Fred, yes, we liked the Janitor idea and started using that when we set up AV and again here at Earth's Banner. It does fit , , ,
As of 04:30 Pacific Standard Time, Registration was turned off. Any who want to register may send us their requested user name to earthsbanner@yahoo.com
P.S. Zorgon, do NOT bite the mailman, no telling what you might catch, , , ,

I think I have told the story of the female post person that used to deliver here to the marina somewhere on the web, so suffice it to say she did not look like that, or I would not have told her to go F herself and the horse she rode in on, , , ,
Sorry Zorgon, if I knew how I would.
