A nice Video by Garrett Lisi, on theoretical psysics:

also, the first comment, when I opened the page, was interesting, as well.

Garrett's talk and images take me back to a Teheran night in July 1978, when I watched for two full hours the most awesome, fascinating UFO performance in the sky above the northern, mountainous part of the city.

Ever since, I have tried to describe to people the incredible beauty and intelligence of the choreography of the masses of multi-coloured lights, always failing miserably to paint the profoundness, the multi-dimensionality, the pure mathematical aesthetics of what I had witnessed.

And now, Garret's patterns and particle interactions sent all my bells ringing, reminding me clearly of that magical celestial dance. The only thing that is missing here are the inner dynamics of the UFO choreography, the varied speeds at which the lights travelled, sometimes covering vast portions of the sky in no time at all: there, the time element was of great importance, as it might have, together with some of the lights disappearing and reappearing, suggested multi-dimensionality.

Is it possible, I now wonder, that the UFO performance was a message, a show of the workings of the universe?

, , , after watching that I would have to say that Garrett loved his spirograph as a kid. :)

also glad he corrected himself here, , ,

Garrett Lisi – February 15 2009Nil is correct -- the LHC collides protons, not protons and antiprotons as I said in the talk. The Tevatron, at Fermilab, collides protons and antiprotons.

A "spanker" and a synchrotron and you got yourself a handful of protons. Helped make the equipment for that, once. Anti-protons is a different story. wouldn't know one if'n I ran over it in my car.
