Is Nasa getting sloppy? In this picture the Marsrover has captured a photograph of what appears to be a piece of wood.

But what about that really bright object in the background directly above the 'wood?' Any ideas?

Here is the full Nasa panoramic view (http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/press/opportunity/20040524a/site_B115_navcam_180_cyl_L-B118R1.jpg)

Gale and I have a photo from the rover taken a couple years ago that show this strange object, or
one like it, but never posted it nor questioned it before.

I highly doubt that it is wood. It appears to have a "twist" to it, but, could be an optical illusion.
As for the bright object in the background, it would require some research at the Mars Rovers
sites into their archives of photos. This photo, I think?, was from the first few weeks after landing
and could be the landing airbags and platform.

Yes I have an idea... but lets use the Rover to have a better look at it shall we? I mean since we have control...

Here is a better shot (this will take a bunch of posts due to IMAGE LIMITS (hint hint)

The Shiny Thing on the Hill

Yup sure is interesting alright... so lets drive over and have a closer look...

Concerning wood on mars what is the story with the "Forests on Mars (http://mmmgroup.altervista.org/e-trees.html)"?

These things are pretty big too, I have read coral type theories but nothing from MSM but for a NASA remark (http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/1999/08/11/mars990811.html) in 2000

NASA scientists think they now know what some tree-like shapes are on the south pole on Mars.

They say the marks are probably made from frost melting on sand dunes.

The latest images of the planet come for the $250 million US Mars Global Surveyor that has been in orbit there since March.

\"Since this whole area is at about -150 degrees Celsius, these are clearly not plants growing up out of the frost\" says Mike Malin, who's responsible for the camera on the spacecraft.

At first scientists thought the formations might have been caused by small gas pockets exploding under sand dunes.

But their latest theory is that the dark shapes are lines of exposed sand standing out among the frost-covered dunes.

As spring warms southern Mars, the frost turns to gas. Wind then blows the frost and sand into patterns that resemble trees when viewed from space.

NASA hopes the images from the spacecraft will offer new insight into weather on Mars.

Two other NASA spacecraft will reach Mars to take more detailed pictures later this year. Then there is the great Mars tree video that also has lakes etc.

Caption reads: NASA seemed unable to separate the forest from the trees. They dismissed these images as rock formations. Well, planet Mars has forest. Lots of it. And lakes too, yes, filled with water. This video presentation made from still images clearly shows forest tree and lake structures. Moreover, the last image is made from a tree in the UK. Just to compare the striking similarities.

I wouldn't be surprised at anything to be honest but try not to jump to conclusions and these have always intrigues me. Has this puzzle been solved already?

There does appear to be artifacts on Mars.
