China arrests dozens after riots

BEIJING - POLICE in northern China have detained dozens of people who rioted because they were angry about the compensation paid for the death of a local man, Xinhua news agency said on Saturday.
A local agricultural company in Wangjia village in northern Shanxi province paid 10,000 yuan (S$2,179) for the funeral costs for Ren Shoufu, a 61-year-old security guard, after he died of an apparent heart attack in the company's gate-house, Xinhua said.

On Friday morning, Mr Ren's foster son 'led more than 150 people wielding wooden rods to block both gates of the company. He said more money should be paid for Ren's death,' the agency said.

The impasse ended after two hours when police detained 77 people.

Girl's death sparks rioting in China

Rioters torched a police building and vehicles in southwest China on Saturday, in unrest triggered by allegations of a cover-up over a girl's death, according to Chinese accounts on the Internet.

The reports of the clash in Weng'an County, Guizhou province, could not be immediately verified and government and police did not answer phone calls in the early hours of Sunday.

But the accounts spreading on the Internet, despite China's state censorship, depicted a violent outburst involving thousands of people and lasting several hours.

Marines Establish Military Presence in San Bernardino County, California

Branson Hunter, writing for the Big Bear Observation Post blog, reports that the Marine Corps Air and Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) and the local California Highway Patrol will be working together over the holiday “in a joint effort to reduce accidents and drinking and driving” in San Bernardino County.

Hunter contacted Corporal Knuesn of the MCAGCC Provost Marshal office and MCAGCC Public Affairs Chief, Gunny Sgt. Chris Cox. Both confirmed the USMC will be present on public roads in order to setup a military presence during routine DUI check stops. “They will be working closely over the month to cut down of traffic accidents,” said Cox, “the Military Police will observe DUI check points and watch for their own guys. The intent is to have military presence out there.”

"Dispatching Marines on California highways is an obvious violation of the Posse Comitatus Act (18 U.S.C. § 1385) passed on June 16, 1878. The Act prohibits members of the federal uniformed services, including military police, from working with state and local police and law enforcement."

Gary Daigneault discussed the ramifications of this joint effort today on his 107.7 F.M. Talk Back show. Mr. Daigneault and his callers seemed to be very concerned. On its face, one may think this is a good idea. But it’s not. I agree with Mr. Daigneault and his callers. Most of which seemed to think this is a very bad idea. Mr. Daigneault contacted a Constitutional Law expert, and the attorney informed him this is absolutely unconstitutional. It’s NOT permitted under the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, 8 U.S.C. § 1385. It’s my understanding that the Constitutional Law expert said CHP officers could be arrested out there working with the Military Police because it’s a “felony.”

Their stated mission is the form of crowd control they practiced in Iraq, subduing "unruly individuals," and the management of a national emergency. I am in Seattle and heard from the brother of one of the soldiers that they are engaged in exercises now. Amy Goodman reported that an Army spokesperson confirmed that they will have access to lethal and non lethal crowd control technologies and tanks.

Microsoft's HealthVault, the medical records database, is to be integrated with VeriMed's human-embedded RFID tags, allowing doctors to access the medical records of unconscious patients with a quick scan of the arm.

VeriMed consists of an RFID tag that is embedded in the arm of a hopefully willing participant, and responds with a 16-digital identity code when queried at 134KHz. This code can then be used to identify the person through VeriChip's website, and will soon be able to link to their medical records as stored on Microsoft's HealthVault system.

(CNN) -- A man angry that a family was talking during a movie threw popcorn at the son and then shot the father in the arm, according to police in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

James Joseph Cialella was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons charges.

James Joseph Cialella, 29, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons violations, a police report said.

Cialella told the family sitting in front of him in the theater on Christmas Day to be quiet, police said.

An argument ensued while others at the Riverview Movie Theatre watched "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Cialella then approached the family from the left side of the aisle and shot the father, who was not identified, as he was standing between Cialella and his family, according to the police report.

The victim was taken to Jefferson Hospital with a gunshot wound to his left arm, police said.

Cialella was carrying a Kel-Tec .380-caliber handgun clipped inside his sweatpants, police said. He was arrested and taken into custody.

I agree, doom and gloom are getting a "the sky is falling" stigma and is starting to generate ridicule. I do not find it ridiculousness to pull a fire alarm when there is fire, to cry wolf when one is spotted. Perhaps this is why we see a increase in doom and gloom in literature and movies.

Adults are taught to be skeptical. But the subconscious is like a toddler

Forget focus groups, marketing studies or even psychographics, 2009 is the year the selling juggernaut will use neuroscience and our own biology against us.

Or rather that's Buy-ology, the name of book by marketing mastermind Martin Lindstrom who recounts his findings from a massive brain-research project exploring why we buy. Appealing directly to the brain's buy impulse is called "neuromarketing," and he spent three years and $7 million, using both CT scanning and fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) technology, to examine how people's brains respond to advertising and marketing ploys.

Lindstrom's findings echo those from some of the psychological strategies, but a surprising amount of the hard science shows that much of the most effective advertising is actually counterintuitive.

For example, health warnings on cigarette packs actually make people long to smoke. In Lindstrom's studies, the sight of these warnings prompted the "craving" center of the subjects' brains to light up. Apparently, there's a subliminal appeal. People love cigarettes, and anything associated with them -- even dire warnings -- will get them salivating like Pavlov's dog. That includes the colours of cigarette packages.

Excluded from the usual ad venues, tobacco companies are way ahead on the subliminal advertising path. They pay attractive businesses such as smart cocktail lounges or NASCAR competitors to adopt package colors, which triggers the craving center of the brain. Suddenly a patron in a gold and burgundy bar has an inexplicable urge to smoke. Cigarettes that feature a rugged individualist cowboy have also branched out into clothing and accessories with heartland style.

Lindstrom says this sort of subliminal advertising is actually more effective than conventional ads -- again, they can tell from the brain scans -- because it doesn't cause the consumer to put up a guard. The site of logos, brand names, or anything overtly connected with selling, such as a TV commercial, engages the conscious mind. Adults are taught to be skeptical. But the subconscious, it seems, is more like a toddler: easily seduced by anything that addresses primal emotional needs.

Police say a man concealing a weapon walked into the KLBJ radio station demanding to speak with Radio Talk-Show host Jeff Ward Tuesday afternoon.

According to a spokesperson with the Austin Police Department, a man by the name of Rocky Perez Lopez asked to speak with Jeff Ward at approximately 2:45 p.m. Tuesday. When Ward was unavailable, police say the individual was lead into the conference room to speak with one of the producers.

Police say Lopez then went on a tirade discussing his anger about the government. Lopez then said he was getting ready to “go postal,” according to police.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A rash of bank robberies in New York has the city's police commissioner worried that criminals have turned banks into "virtual cash machines" and some wondering whether tough economic times are fueling the trend.

On Monday alone, robbers targeted five banks in the Big Apple, some striking in broad daylight and near famous landmarks.

Police called the incidents unrelated, but they're just the latest examples of the growing tally of hold-ups.

Bank robberies in New York have risen 54 percent compared with last year, with criminals committing more than 430 in the past 12 months, according to the New York police department.

"As it stands now, they've turned into virtual cash machines," New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

Burris claims the shooting was intentional, and that he planned to ask Alameda County prosecutors to seek criminal charges against the officer. Burris said Grant, of Hayward, Calif., posed no threat to officers when a bullet entered his back and ricocheted to his lung area, killing him almost instantly.

“The officer leaned (in), was straddling over him and pointed his gun directly into the backside and shot (Grant),” said Burris, adding that Grant was handcuffed — after he was shot. “This was not a deadly force situation.”

The shooting of Oscar Grant, 22, early on New Year's Day at a busy train station in Oakland, California, sparked widespread outrage. The incident was caught on video by at least three witnesses.

Footage shows Bay Area Rapid Transit police officers responding to a call about two groups of men fighting on a train around 2am on January 1. The officers put several of the young men on the ground against a wall on the station platform.

Mr Grant, who was travelling home after celebrating New Year's Eve in San Francisco, can be seen rising to his knees before being pushed back down by police. According to local television news reports, at least one of the home videos shows an officer putting his knee on Mr Grant before a colleague draws his gun and fires. Mr Grant, a butcher at an Oakland supermarket, died later that morning.

In a dramatic story that has been stoked by amateur YouTube videos, the aftermath of the fatal New Year's Day shooting of a young man by a BART officer unfolded Wednesday on several fronts - with protests, a funeral and an announcement that the officer had resigned.

Late Wednesday, Oakland police responded to scattered disturbances as hundreds of protesters gathered around the Lake Merritt BART station, overturned trash cans, lit a dumpster on fire and rocked a police car back and forth. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. It was unclear whether there were any arrests or injuries.

Earlier that day, more than 1,000 people turned out at a Hayward church to remember Oscar Grant III , who one worshipper called "the apple of God's eyes.'' Cell phone videos apparently show Grant face down being shot by an officer standing over him.

On the same day, as word spread that Officer Johannes Mehserle had quit the force, about 50 protesters met with Alameda County District Attorney Tom Orloff to demand that his office file charges against Mehserle in the shooting at the Fruitvale BART station. After initially resisting, Orloff let the protesters into his office, but excluded about a dozen members of the press waiting outside in the lobby. The group included 10 local pastors, Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson, and Oakland City Councilmember Desley Brooks, who has called Grant's death "an execution.''

BART officials announced Wednesday that Mehserle, 27, had resigned.

Unusually Large U.S. Weapons Shipment to Israel: Are the US and Israel Planning a Broader Middle East War?

A very large delivery of US weaponry to Israel consisting of 3,000 tons of \"ammunition\" is scheduled to sail to Israel. The size and nature of the shipments are described as \"unusual\":

\"Shipping 3,000-odd tons of ammunition in one go is a lot,\" one broker said, on condition of anonymity.

\"This (kind of request) is pretty rare and we haven't seen much of it quoted in the market over the years,\" he added.

\"Shipping brokers in London who have specialized in moving arms for the British and U.S. military in the past said such ship charters to Israel were rare. (Reuters, Jan 10, 2009)

The Pentagon has entrusted a Greek merchant shipping company to deliver the weapons to Israel:

\"The U.S. is seeking to hire a merchant ship to deliver hundreds of tons of arms to Israel from Greece later this month, tender documents seen by Reuters show.

The U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command (MSC) said the ship was to carry 325 standard 20-foot containers of what is listed as \"ammunition\" on two separate journeys from the Greek port of Astakos to the Israeli port of Ashdod in mid-to-late January.

A \"hazardous material\" designation on the manifest mentions explosive substances and detonators, but no other details were given.(Ibid)

It is worth noting that a similar unusually large shipment of US ordinance to Israel was scheduled in early December:

\"Tender documents indicate that the German ship hired by the US in early December also carried a massive cargo of weapons that weighed over 2.6 million kg [2600 tons] and filled up to 989 standard 20-foot containers to Ashdod from North Carolina.\" (Press TV, 10 Jan 2009)

Are These Large Shipments of Ordinance Connected to the Invasion of Gaza?

The request by the Pentagon to transport ordinance in a commercial vessel, according to Reuters, was made on December 31, 4 days after the commencement of the aerial bombings of Gaza by F16 Fighter jets.

Analysts have hastily concluded, without evidence, that the 2 shipments of \"ammunition\" were intended to supply Israel's armed forces in support of its military invasion of Gaza.

\"A senior military analyst in London who declined to be named said that, because of the timing, the shipments could be \"irregular\" and linked to the Gaza offensive.\" (Reuters, January 10, 2009)

USDA unable to weed out unapproved modified foods

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. food supply is at risk of being invaded by unapproved imports of genetically modified crops and livestock, a USDA internal audit report released Wednesday said.

The report, released by the U.S. Agriculture Department's Office of Inspector General, said the USDA does not have an import control policy to regulate imported GMO animals.

Its policy for GMO crops, though adequate now, could become outdated as other nations boost production of their own GMO crops, the report added.

The Office of Inspector General recommended the department develop an overall control policy for all GMO imports and implement a strategy to monitor GMO crop and livestock development in foreign nations.

The audit found that the USDA needs to develop screening measures to weed out undeclared GMO crops and livestock. The department currently has no measures in place to identify a shipment of unapproved GMO imports unknown to the U.S. regulatory system, the report said.

The United States has been a forerunner in developing GMO plants and animals since the 1990s, but other countries are beginning to invest more in biotechnology.

The report noted that China has pledged $500 million toward biotechnology by 2010 and has developed a new form of GMO rice.
Although the implications associated with Americans consuming unapproved GMO food are unknown, the health and environmental concerns that it poses could threaten commerce.

The USDA's lack of policies and monitoring capability on the matter reflect the United States' dominance over the global market concerning genetic modification.

\"Department officials stated that they have not needed such a strategy because most transgenic plants were first developed within the U.S. regulatory system, and it was unlikely that anything unfamiliar would be imported,\" the report said.

\"And transgenic animals have not been commercialized,\" the report also said of officials' reasoning behind being slow to develop regulations.
The USDA, for the most part, agreed with the report's recommendations.
In a letter to the Office of Inspector General, the USDA said it would create a plan for monitoring GMO plant and animal developments worldwide by November 30. But further action on policy would require approval from the incoming administration.

Data has shown that the sun's heliosphere is shrinking
New data has revealed that the heliosphere, the protective shield of energy that surrounds our solar system, has weakened by 25 per cent over the past decade and is now at it lowest level since the space race began 50 years ago.

Scientists are baffled at what could be causing the barrier to shrink in this way and are to launch mission to study the heliosphere.
The Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, will be launched from an aircraft on Sunday on a Pegasus rocket into an orbit 150,000 miles above the Earth where it will \"listen\" for the shock wave that forms as our solar system meets the interstellar radiation.

Dr Nathan Schwadron, co-investigator on the IBEX mission at Boston University, said: \"The interstellar medium, which is part of the galaxy as a whole, is actually quite a harsh environment. There is a very high energy galactic radiation that is dangerous to living things.

\"Around 90 per cent of the galactic cosmic radiation is deflected by our heliosphere, so the boundary protects us from this harsh galactic environment.\"

The heliosphere is created by the solar wind, a combination of electrically charged particles and magnetic fields that emanate a more than a million miles an hour from the sun, meet the intergalactic gas that fills the gaps in space between solar systems.

At the boundary where they meet a shock wave is formed that deflects interstellar radiation around the solar system as it travels through the galaxy.

The scientists hope the IBEX mission will allow them to gain a better understanding of what happens at this boundary and help them predict what protection it will offer in the future.

Without the heliosphere the harmful intergalactic cosmic radiation would make life on Earth almost impossible by destroying DNA and making the climate uninhabitable.

Measurements made by the Ulysses deep space probe, which was launched in 1990 to orbit the sun, have shown that the pressure created inside the heliosphere by the solar wind has been decreasing.

Dr David McComas, principal investigator on the IBEX mission, said: \"It is a fascinating interaction that our sun has with the galaxy surrounding us. This million mile an hour wind inflates this protective bubble that keeps us safe from intergalactic cosmic rays.

\"With less pressure on the inside, the interaction at the boundaries becomes weaker and the heliosphere as a whole gets smaller.\"
If the heliosphere continues to weaken, scientists fear that the amount of cosmic radiation reaching the inner parts of our solar system, including Earth, will increase.
This could result in growing levels of disruption to electrical equipment, damage satellites and potentially even harm life on Earth.
But Dr McComas added that it was still unclear exactly what would happen if the heliosphere continued to weaken or what even what the timescale for changes in the heliosphere are.
He said: “There is no imminent danger, but it is hard to know what the future holds. Certainly if the solar wind pressure was to continue to go down and the heliosphere were to almost evaporate then we would be in this sea of galactic cosmic rays. That could have some large effects.
“It is likely that there are natural variations in solar wind pressure and over time it will either stabilise or start going back up.”[/SIZE]

PASADENA, Calif. -- Data from the Ulysses spacecraft, a joint NASA-European Space Agency mission, show the sun has reduced its output of solar wind to the lowest levels since accurate readings became available. The sun's current state could reduce the natural shielding that envelops our solar system.

"The sun's million mile-per-hour solar wind inflates a protective bubble, or heliosphere, around the solar system. It influences how things work here on Earth and even out at the boundary of our solar system where it meets the galaxy," said Dave McComas, Ulysses' solar wind instrument principal investigator and senior executive director at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas. "Ulysses data indicate the solar wind's global pressure is the lowest we have seen since the beginning of the space age."

The sun's solar wind plasma is a stream of charged particles ejected from the sun's upper atmosphere. The solar wind interacts with every planet in our solar system. It also defines the border between our solar system and interstellar space.

This border, called the heliopause, is a bubble-shaped boundary surrounding our solar system where the solar wind's strength is no longer great enough to push back the wind of other stars. The region around the heliopause also acts as a shield for our solar system, warding off a significant portion of the cosmic rays outside the galaxy.

Galactic cosmic rays are of great interest to NASA. Cosmic rays are linked to engineering decisions for unmanned interplanetary spacecraft and exposure limits for astronauts traveling beyond low-Earth orbit.

A friend in South Carolina sent me an email saying that he was personally embarrassed as a Southern to have such a fine State's Rights position taken in the North while the South continues to kowtow to runaway federalism.

Turns out a number of states - other than New Hampshire which I told you about earlier this week - are considering petitions to Washington saying, in effect, if we didn't grant you power specifically in an area of governance, we're not going to take marching orders from you.

A former transit police officer charged with murder was released from custody Friday after posting a $3 million bail.

Video shows Johannes Mehserle shoot Oscar Grant III in the back as another officer knelt on him.

Dozens of demonstrators gathered in downtown Oakland to protest the release of Johannes Mehserle, 27, charged with killing an unarmed man on New Year's Day.

The former Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer's release funds came from unknown sources, Alameda officials told CNN.

Video taken by a bystander showed Mehserle pulling his gun and fatally shooting Oscar Grant III, 22, in the back as another officer kneeled on Grant.

Mehserle may have intended to draw and fire his Taser instead of his gun, according to a court filing by his attorney.

In January, protests turned violent after a judge decided to allow bail for Mehserle's release.

A preliminary hearing in the case is set for March 23, authorities said.

A new kind of street warfare is breaking out against wall street titans - and it's happening on their lawns and outside their lobbies too.

A corps of agitators - financed, ironically, with federal-stimulus millions - is making the rounds of suburban mansions and posh co-ops of wall street bankers and ceos, haranguing them for their errors in the housing crisis.

"when you take our homes, we're going to your homes to make you accountable," said activist bruce marks, following a sunny weekend of marching with 350 angry protesters at two high-profile targets.

The group, chanting into their bullhorns and waving protest signs such as "make your home, our home," rallied for an hour around the rye, ny, mansion of john mack, head of morgan stanley.

The crowd earlier struck in nearby greenwich, conn., pouring into a gated enclave and onto the grounds of the palatial home of greenwich financial services ceo william frey. No incidents or ceo sightings were reported at either spot.

"we don't get permits to protest, we just show up," said marks, who boasts of being a "bank terrorist."

the group in the coming weeks will head to park avenue and central park west homes of other titans, including lloyd blankfein of goldman sachs.

Their main goal, however, is to sway decision makers at top financial firms to sign vendor deals with marks and his group to rewrite soured mortgages for homeowners.

His web site says the group "has agreements with many lenders to make mortgages affordable, but the below executives have refused (to sign one)," citing at least eight targeted execs, including blankfein and hsbc's ceo brendan mcdonagh.

Using a lengthy and tenacious campaign of angry marches, even spilling into the offices of institutions, the group has managed to corral more than $10 billion from banking partners to finance cheap mortgages. It recently was granted $15 million in stimulus money.

Even mayor bloomberg awarded the group a grant, which two months ago was among 19 non-profits getting a total $2.3 million to help sort out flopped mortgages here.

Marks, a long-time mortgage broker, founded the activist housing group, neighborhood assistance corporation of america, whose mission is to create affordable homes and to stop predatory lending.

Marks sent 300 protesters charging into citigroup's annual meeting in 2003, ultimately winning a pledge of $3 billion in loans for his constituents. Bank of america's ken lewis recently folded to similar pressure and has pledged $6 billion for the effort.

When uncle sam's $700 billion rescue package was shaping up in october, marks and his group blocked the entrance of mortgage giant fannie mae until he got a sit-down with its executives. Now, marks works with fannie mae to restructure mortgages for an undisclosed remuneration.

Marks said his group has generated about 50,000 loans in the past decade.

An Indiana county municipal official in the vicinity of Chicago reveals the contents of his meetings with FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security. The initial requests seem reasonable enough when FEMA asks the county officials to prepare a Hazard Mitigation Plan to deal with flooding, fires, high winds and tornadoes.
But as the required meetings and calls with FEMA and DHS continue over a two year period their request become more unusual, raising suspicions of county officials

“We want to know every important thing in this county. We want to know where police departments are. Where weapons are stored. Hazardous material. Where can we land a helicopter. Where are the airports. How big a plane can you land at the airport. Where are all the bridges. Where are all the power stations. Where are all the generating stations.Where are all the substations. They literally wanted to know where everything was. I’m sitting there thinking man if there was ever martial law. This kind of information is exactly the kind of stuff they are going to want. We’re just laying it all out for them right there.”

During the legally mandated meetings held with FEMA and DHS different disaster scenarios were reveled to county officials:

In late December 2008 municipal officials were invited to Indianapolis for a briefing on the state of Indiana. There were told if industry were to collapse for example GM going bankrupt resulting in mass unemployment a depression would soon follow and municipalities could expect to loose 40% of their funds.
-Every county in the nation would be required to prepare a Hazard Mitigation Plan.
-The county should prepare a plan to vaccinate the entire population within 48 hours and practice the plan several times.
-FEMA inquired to where mass graves could be placed in the county and would they accept bodies from elsewhere.
-The sheriff’s department via the state sheriff association was told that no .223 ammunition rounds would be available as the military would be purchasing all stocks.
-The county was asked to make plans for “hardening” of police and fire stations, putting in hardened bunker type buildings around town.
-The county was asked to make plans for the possibility of up to 400,000 refugees from Chicago.

As drug cartels continue to terrorize Mexico, Texas officials are planning for the worst-case scenario: how to respond if the violence spills over the border, and what to do if thousands of Mexicans seek refuge in the United States.

Katherine Cesinger, a spokeswoman for Texas Gov. Rick Perry, said a multi-agency contingency plan is being developed, and it will focus primarily on law enforcement issues, including how to handle an influx of Mexicans fleeing violence.

"At this point, what we're focusing on is spillover violence," Cesinger told FOXNews.com Thursday. "The immediate concern, if any, would be that."

More than 5,300 people were killed in Mexico last year in connection to criminal activity, and some experts predict things will get worse. Along with Pakistan, Mexico was identified in a Department of Defense report last year as a country that could destabilize rapidly.

Homeland security may not be a laughing matter, but ABC's new "Homeland Security USA" has a certain fitful risibility -- like when border agents capture a cache of sinister plastic toys, or discover that one of the items seized as "confiscated food" and initially identified as "a prohibited meat item of unknown origin" turns out to be barbecued bat from Thailand. Eeeuuww.

While the series -- an upscale "Cops" with an international air -- oozes with praise for the "thousands of dedicated men and women" whose job it is to keep saboteurs from gaining entry into the United States, nary a single solitary terrorist is nabbed in the opening episode. Instead, the agents make drug bust after drug bust, at one point confiscating a set of glass pipes even though their owner has no illegal substances in his possession.

Zen, I watched the entire video of David Icke and Arizona Wilder. I have watched this video before and a few things stand out that is not touched on. Multiple personalities is a sure fire indicator of possession. We are just beginning to understand the technologies used to perpetrate these crimes against humanity. They are being labeled non-lethal weapons.

As a craftsman in the art of acting, one becomes quite attuned to the rhythm and cadence in the delivery of speech. It becomes easy to spot the flickering eyelid that occurs when a false statement is made. One can notice a searching pause in the delivery of a sentence when lacking the immediacy in truth.

When I look into her eyes there seems to be a veil of sorts. Her delivery is sure but her demeanor is constrained here (as what we refer to) as her throughline. Thus, as a performance - for it is not a revelatory offering IN THE MOMENT - it comes from an intentional crafting. It does not contain the "sparks of life" that we learn to put into the delivery through our voice and eyes. Hers is rote.

Huge protest over Irish economy

About 100,000 people have taken part in protests in Dublin city centre to vent their anger at the Irish government’s handling of the country’s recession.

They oppose plans to impose a pension levy on 350,000 public sector workers. Trade union organisers of the march said workers did not cause the economic crisis but were having to pay for it.

In a statement, the Irish government said it recognised that the measures it was taking were “difficult and in some cases painful”.

The pension levy was “reasonable”, the government said.
It reflected “the reality that we are not in a position to continue to meet the public service pay bill in the circumstances of declining revenue”, it added.
Reports say the plan could cost the 350,000 public sector workers between 1,500 euros and 2,800 euros (£2,500) a year.

Large numbers of police forces are planning to cut thousands of officers despite the threat of a recession-driven surge in crime and disorder.

Representatives from dozens of police forces contacted by The Times last night gave a grim picture of falling numbers and “significant and painful” cuts.

One of Britain’s most experienced chief constables said that forces were being dangerously weakened at a time when a strong police force could be essential to “hold the line”. Timothy Brain, Chief Constable of Gloucestershire since 2001, said: “There is a risk of increased crime and disorder as a result of the effect of recession and many police forces will be made weaker as a result of the latest grant and council tax settlements.”

Violence between repo men, car owners on the rise

HALSELL, Ala. – Alone in his mobile home off a winding dirt road, Jimmy Tanks heard a commotion at 2:30 a.m. just outside his bedroom window: Somebody was messing with his car.

The 67-year-old railroad retiree grabbed a gun, walked out the back door and confronted not a thief but a repo man and two helpers trying to tow off the Chrysler Sebring. Shots were fired, and Tanks wound up dead, a bullet in his chest.

The man who came to repossess the car, Kenneth Alvin Smith, is awaiting trial on a murder charge in a state considered a Wild West territory even by the standards of an industry that's largely unregulated nationally. Since Tanks' death last June, two other repo men from the same company Smith worked for were shot, one fatally.

"It's gotten to where it's a crazy world out there," said Smith, 50, an ex-Marine who preaches part-time and sings gospel music. Smith said Thursday that he fired in self-defense after Tanks fired a shot.

With the U.S. dealing with an economic slide that has cost millions of jobs, the number of vehicle repossessions is expected to rise 5 percent this year. That's after it jumped 12 percent to 1.67 million nationally in 2008, said Tom Webb, chief economist with Manheim Consulting, an automotive marketing firm. That followed a 9 percent increase in 2007, creating more opportunities for bad outcomes in an industry where armed confrontations and threats happen every day.

The \"mobile urban jails\" will be used in targeted areas such as those rife with knife crime and anti-social behaviour or where there is no police station nearby.

They will allow officers to process criminals, fingerprint them and issue, on-the-spot fines, bail or court summons without having to go back to a police station.

A satellite link will even allow a custody sergeants to charge offenders via video while offenders could be held for up to six hours.
Similar but permanent facilities will also be set up in shopping centres - dubbed \"retail jails\" - to allow police to deal with high volume, low level offending, such a shoplifting and drunks, without having to go to and from police stations.

In 2007, the Home Office raised similar proposals with short term holding facilities to be set up in shopping centres or major sporting venues, nicknamed at the time \"Tesco jails\".

The Tory proposals are part of a series of measures to reduce police bureaucracy and give officers more time on the streets.

Through its various agencies and treaties, the United Nations seeks to undermine individual, as well as national sovereignty. It has been almost 15 years since President Clinton signed on to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The U.S. remains one of the last holdouts as the treaty lies dormant, yet to be ratified. The UNCRC grants children new civil, social, cultural and economic rights that could override parental decisions. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), is pushing for a vote as there is a real sense that under an Obama presidency, the UNCRC could finally be ratified.

Under the guise of human rights, the UN agenda is to further breakup the family.

If the UNCRC (http://www.everychildmatters.gov.uk/uncrc/) is ratified, parents could be prohibited from homeschooling and spanking their children. It undermines parental authority and gives more power to the state to further dictate how children are raised. It grants children dangerous new rights thus encouraging more rebellious behavior. The truth is that in many cases, children do not have the wisdom and maturity to make sound decisions. The treaty also gives children the mechanism by which they could dispute any parental judgment. The UNCRC transfers more parental authority to the state while granting children radical new rights.
Under the UNCRC, an 18-member committee has been established to review children’s rights and any other disputes that might arise. In many cases, we are already bound by international treaties and the UNCRC gives unaccountable UN bureaucrats the power to make decisions concerning our children’s well-being. Parents are being demoted to simple caregivers, while the state assumes the role of the prime authoritative figure. The UNCRC is an assault on parental authority and is essentially a blank check for governmental interference in family matters. It is meant to further promote child autonomy and freedom from parental guidance.
In the U.S., homeschooling numbers continue to rise as a growing number of parents look to better control their child’s moral instruction. Under the UNCRC, homeschooling could be interpreted as a violation of a child’s well being. Some states have tried to ban and outlaw homeschooling and the UNCRC could make it a UN-sponsored activity. Public school education is designed to correct any perceived errors in rearing and home training. The ideology of globalism and world government is at the very core of the educational system. The UN seeks to undermine parental authority, traditional values and biblical principles. They wish to gain more control over our children’s upbringing and education.

Under the guise of human rights, the UN agenda is to further breakup the family. At recent meetings held in Mexico City, United Nations Population Fund representative, Arie Hoekman, told participants that high divorce rates and out-of-wedlock births were not a social crisis, but instead a triumph for human rights. Traditional values and principles instilled by parents, are being manipulated and pushed aside. The breakdown of the family is bringing about a rise in new values. Children’s love and loyalty to their family and country is being systematically destroyed. Under a new global order, there is no room for nationalism or individuality and a strong family unit represents a threat to this system.
Being a parent is a huge responsibility and undertaking that should not be taken lightly. Parents are not always right and some may be unfit. The reality is that children thrive in an environment where there is love and structure which includes consequences for their behavior. The UNCRC infringes upon parental authority and represents a massive intrusion by the state into family affairs. It has the potential to radically alter parent-child relationships. The UN definitely has no business telling parents how to raise their children and neither does the government unless there is evidence of neglect or abuse. The UN is a morally bankrupt institution with a horrible record of protecting human rights around the world and the U.S ratifying the UNCRC will not change that.

Every parent needs to hear about the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and then tell everyone they can. This threat to state sovereignty and parental rights is only a vote away from ratification in the United States.

Be Educated! Senate ratification of the UNCRC would be the death knell for Parental Rights as we know them. We can’t let the opposition redefine and overturn state parental rights laws simply because we are too ignorant to protest.

As a side note on children here in BC, Canada, the guardianship of children is automatically of the 'State' unless a parent gets a court order stating otherwise. That way the 'State' can justify doing whatever they want with or to someones children.
So if you have a child, that child is living with you, you are raising that child, that does not mean you are the guardian of that child, you are just caregiver and parent.

PS. I have court papers stating I have sole custody and guardianship for all 3 of my children, hopefully the 'State' will piss off.

As a former paralegal, I should tell you that once you are assigned a social security number here in the US, you are now chattel of the government, and that means your kids are not YOURS, you are only allowed to provide for them to adulthood so they can further benefit the government. By the way, when you get married under the laws of the government, you have made them a party to the union and therefore, you allow them a position of authority in your union and subject to their rules. Marriage was originally a contract between two individuals for their own benefit and use - not the government's.

More than 800 people applied for a school janitor’s job at Edison Junior High School.

The job — full time with benefits — pays $15-16 an hour.

Perry Local Schools attracted national attention with the number of applicants for the position — a sign of economic times in Stark County.

The job opened Feb. 28, and the deadline to apply was 3:30 this afternoon.

Business manager Barry Mason said he accepted a total of 835 applications during a 10-day period. Today, alone, district officials received 168 more applications.

“It’s going to be like hitting the lotto,” said John Pettigrew, 54, of Jackson Township, one of the many vying for the job.

Mason said he expects the hiring process to take at least three weeks before a new janitor is on the payroll.

“We want to be fair and mindful to all those folks. We have no rush on our end,” he said.

Obama: Troop move to Mexican border under consideration

WASHINGTON — President Obama weighed in Wednesday on the escalating drug war on the U.S.-Mexico border, saying that he was looking at possibly deploying National Guard troops to contain the violence but ruled out any immediate military move.

"We're going to examine whether and if National Guard deployments would make sense and under what circumstances they would make sense," Obama said during an interview with journalists for regional papers, including a McClatchy reporter.

"I don't have a particular tipping point in mind," he said. "I think it's unacceptable if you've got drug gangs crossing our borders and killing U.S. citizens."

Already this year there have been 1,000 people killed in Mexico along the border, following 2008's death toll of 5,800, according to federal officials who credit Mexican President Felipe Calderon for a crackdown on drug cartels.

But the spillover on the border -- for example, to El Paso from neighboring Ciudad Juarez -- has created a political reaction.

In a recent visit to El Paso, Texas Gov. Rick Perry called for 1,000 troops to protect the border.

Obama was cautious, however. "We've got a very big border with Mexico," he said. "I'm not interested in militarizing the border."

The president praised Calderon, "who I believe is really working hard and taking some extraordinary risks under extraordinary pressure to deal with the drug cartels and the corresponding violence that's erupted along the borders."

Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Calif., chair of a key subcommittee on border security, will hold a hearing Thursday on Mexican border violence.

"Last week Mexico sent an additional 3,200 soldiers to the border," Sanchez said in a prepared opening statement for the hearing, "increasing the total number of Mexican soldiers combating drug cartels to more than 45,000."

Sanchez chairs the House Committee on Homeland Security's subcommittee on border, maritime and global counterterrorism.

"It should be noted that over 200 U.S. citizens have been killed in this drug war, either because they were involved in the cartels or were innocent bystanders," she said. "With those concerns in mind, it is essential that the Department of Homeland Security, along with other relevant departments, continue to pursue a contingency plan to address 'spillover' violence along our border."

At a hearing this week, Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas, who visited Mexico last month as part of a congressional delegation tour, praised the so-called Merida Initiative -- a drug cartel fighting agreement between the U.S. and Mexico that provides Mexico with $1.4 billion to control drug trafficking.

"From helicopters and surveillance planes to non-intrusive inspection equipment, the U.S. investment is intended to provide the hardware necessary for the Mexican government to extend its authority to those remote and hard-to-access parts of the country ravaged by the drug trade," said Granger.

That agreement between Calderon and President George W. Bush will be updated, Obama said.

"We expect to have a comprehensive approach to dealing with these issues of border security that will involve supporting Calderon and his efforts in a partnership, also making sure we are dealing with the flow of drug money and guns south, because it's really a two-way situation there," said Obama.

"The drugs are coming north, we're sending funds and guns south," he said. "As a consequence, these cartels have gained extraordinary power. Our expectation is to have a comprehensive policy in place in the next few months."

China calls for new reserve currency

China’s central bank on Monday proposed replacing the US dollar as the international reserve currency with a new global system controlled by the International Monetary Fund.

In an essay posted on the People’s Bank of China’s website, Zhou Xiaochuan, the central bank’s governor, said the goal would be to create a reserve currency “that is disconnected from individual nations and is able to remain stable in the long run, thus removing the inherent deficiencies caused by using credit-based national currencies”.
