See? Told ya it'd be here :alien:

Confession: I am a hopeless Internet Packrat.

I also have about 13 years in Internet/web programming. And I have set up, on my home machine a browsing and search system, a la Google, for my little collection. This is mainly text. Databases, plus classical literature, books of all kinds, hiostorical documents, political articles, blah blah blah, and only relevant graphic files (graphics and vids is another section).

Current stats:
approx 40,000 files, roughly 8 Gig.

About 70% of this has been converted from text, pdf, whatever into HTML files by Fred's boney lil fingers. Text to HTML, and text to Database is what I've done the last 12 years.

One of the reasons for it is the search system. It's great to be able to just grab a chunk of info, throw it into an HTML file, and it's added to the search automatically. Fun on rainy days, too.

Now, one of the things I have carried forward from way back in the late 80's, early 90's is a collection of files from places like ParaNet, Keely Net, and the like.

No, this is not late-breaking stuff. But, one thing I've found it handy for, apart from it's "historical" attraction, is identifying misc kinds of "Wanabes" and such. Amazing how many stories you read on the web about, "This VERY reliable dude, who knows a guy, who had beers with this NSA/CIA/FBI/DIA/MI guy" who said... that are nothing more than re-combinate stuff from the last 4 decades cut/copy/pasted together with a new face.

This particular section is roughly 48 Mb, 1358 files. It scrunches down to UfoSection.zip which is 27.9 Mb

If you want to see a complete listing of file names and sizes, click here:
http://fredsitelive.com/personal/UFO_Data.htm

Here's the thing:
I could FTP the zip file to my server, post a link here, and let y'all take a copy, do with it what ya want. In fact, that is my intention.

My worry:
There are about 45 people cruising the site right now. That wouldn't be a problem. What my site can't afford right now if for 300 people to pull down the file, over a 7 day period, and run my bandwidth way the hell and gone. I do not know what my limit is. So...

Plan A: if someone has a site where this wouldn't be a problem, I could get the zip file to them.... OR...

Plan b: Maybe put it on my site, with advanced warning to folk here. I'd only want to leave it there, say 24 hours to prevent getting the site mauled. Or...

Plan C: No one's interested, in which case Me n'my dog Panda (http://fredsitelive.com/images/post/Panda_00.jpg) can just go watch cartoons.

What say y'all?

Fred

Incidentally that listing at:
http://fredsitelive.com/personal/UFO_Data.htm

was generated by a VBScript program I wrote. You give it a name for the file, a starting folder, and it will write an HTML page of all files from that point down, write it to the starting folder, then open a copy in IE.

If anyone is interested I can post a link to where you can d'load that on my site as well.

There is lot in there which I have not seen or read (I think). But I'm not that pc-crack that I ubderstand all you say. If I can download, yes please.........

Yes, Fred(C), I'd like to have a browse through that little lot. yipee!

How about? You upload the zip to FileMail.com (or something similar) and post the download link here. It's free. I've used it to send audio WAVs to a friend, it's really simple but there's one snag, I think there's a time limit and a download limit. RapidShare would be better, perhaps.

Ok, the file is up.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be coy or anything. I just didn't want to put up a 28 meg file, and leave it there if there wasn't any interest.

The link is: http://fredsitelive.com/personal/UfoSection.zip

I'll leave the file up there till tomorrow about this time, then delete it off the site.

kewel!

I am gonna give this a look see for sure

like sokpuppet said you could use rapidshare (http://www.rapidshare.com/) or many of the other free filesharing sites out there if bandwidth becomes an issue

thanks for this!

Just a thought...

Ok.....

Re the UFO BBS file archive;

The whole "Visitor Messages" thing is confusing as hell. I can't tell whether
I am responding to people,
an orgy-list of messages,
who gets them and who doesn't,
whether to scratch my watch, or wind my butt. So...

I figure, if I go find the orig. post, and put a message here, it'll float up to the top of the board, and that way Swami, Norval, and whoever else was interested can have another shot at this.

I did upload the files, when I posted this thread.
In fact, I forgot about it, and it was up there almost a week, before I deleted it. Anyway... I am putting the zip file back up.

1. Go here: http://fredsitelive.com/personal/
You will see a listing of files in the folder. The listing is alphabetical and the file you want is: UfoSection.zip (Or click on this: http://fredsitelive.com/personal/UfoSection.zip )

2. R-click on it, and select "Save Target As..." and you'll get a copy.

3. If you want an html page with a listing of all the files in the zip file then also grab: UFO_Data.htm. That is the list. ( Or click on this: http://fredsitelive.com/personal/UFO_Data.htm )

It is Wednesday, 2:45 AM PST

I'll leave the zip file on the server until Sunday nite.

Sorry I was so long in getting back to this.
1. I had puter troubles on top of holiday madness.
2. It took me a bit to figure out what the "visitor messages" were about.
Must've parked my brain in a tow-away zone or something.

Gary;
Don't let nuttin but fear stop ya! ;)

Being a certified (-able) internet packrat, and like all things in life, if you hold on to old files long enough, what you wind up with is a lotta junk and the occasional classic.

I guarantee there's is a bit of both in there.

Ok then. a gentle reminder that it's Friday, and I will take the file down, sometime Sunday nite. ok?

To explain. this isn't me being any kind of wierd, other than the fact I would hate for my website bandwidth to be consumed by a horde of folk, all downloading a 28 Mb file. things have an odd way of getting around, and that's all I'm worried about.

Thanx,
Fred

Feedback, please.

It's Sunday nite. Should I keep the file up? or can I take it down?

Again, my only concern here, so long as I have the room, is the whole world coming across it, on a fluke, and trying to snag it. It's the bandwidth I worry about.

See, heres the thing.
I get my website for free. This happens because I do web work for the guy who has the account. There are about 7 other websites on this server, and because I do part-time slave work there, I get mine hosted for nuttin'. So far, no bandwidth limitations, and they don't seem to complain about size (I have close to 1,500 files there now.).

Now, as friendly as we are, this would probably change should I do something rash, and start hosting an mp3 exchange site, or something silly like that. In short, I don't want to abuse the privilige, and this is just me making sure I don't.

Anyway. Lemme know,
Fred
